This format was intended to meet the demand for playing and recording high-definition content, which far surpasses the video quality DVD can handle. With remarkable high quality video and crisp audio clarity, Blu-ray also offers increased storage capacity--up to 25 GB of content on a single-sided disc and enough space for two hours of high-definition movies or recorded content. HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).
Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

High Definition Formats: The most common high-def (HD) video format is 720p, which displays video at 720 vertical by 1280 horizontal pixels. The "p" denotes that it is progressive scan, meaning that all video lines are filled at the same time. The 1080i format displays video at 1080 vertical by 1920 horizontal pixels, and the "i" means that it is interlaced (the old-school way of presenting video where the screen scans the odd-numbered video lines first, then the even-numbered lines). The 1080p format has the same pixel resolution as 1080i, but it is a progressive scan format and thus has a constant vertical resolution of 720 lines.

In the real world, though, pristine source material isn’t available for every Blu-ray disc—due to age or neglect of the original elements—and there are plenty of movies and TV shows on DVD that you’ll still want to watch on your Blu-ray player. Answers to Basic Questions About Blu-ray
What is Blu-ray?
Blu-ray is a new optical disc format with over five and a half times the storage capacity of a standard DVD (25 GB versus 4.5 GB). A dual-layer Blu-ray disc can hold up to 50 GB of information. With that increased storage, movie studios can finally provide movies on disc in high definition, offering 6x the resolution or image detail of DVD and up to 8 channels of lossless (better than CD quality) digital sound. The new format can also provide interactive features that go well above anything ever offered before.

Is Blu-ray different than HDTV?
HDTV, or high definition television, is a new broadcasting format that offers widescreen, high resolution images offering 6x the resolution or image detail of DVD, with up to 5.1 channels of digital audio. Until now, the signals were only available through over the air transmissions (via an antenna), or through digital cable and satellite signals. You can not get HD signals from a standard video tape or DVD. An HDTV is a high resolution video display that is capable of receiving and displaying these HDTV broadcasts or images. Blu-ray is a complement to your HDTV. It's a disc media format that has enough storage to include an entire movie, plus soundtracks and bonus materials, recorded in the high definition format. You can play Blu-ray discs back on your HDTV and see the same, if not better image and sound quality as you do from HDTV broadcasts.

What kind of TV do I need to enjoy Blu-ray?
You can play back Blu-ray movies on any TV with composite video or better inputs (not RF), but to get a worthwhile benefit from the format over DVD you'll want to have a high-definition television, or HDTV, with a vertical resolution higher than 480p, and preferably higher than 720p. Most Blu-ray titles can deliver an image with a vertical resolution of 1080i or 1080p. The more horizontal resolution the TV can reproduce, up to 1920 lines or pixels, the better.

How are Blu-ray discs different than regular DVDs?
Blu-ray discs are the same size as DVD or CD, but use a blue* laser to store and read data as opposed to the red laser used in DVDs and CDs. The blue laser's shorter wavelength, combined with a smaller aperture lens and a thinner cover layer on the disc makes it possible to create a smaller beam spot size capable of storing and reading much more, smaller information on the disc. A single-layer Blu-ray disc can hold 25 GB worth of data, compared to 4.5 on a standard DVD. A dual layer BD disc holds up to 50 GB. This translates into the ability to store a full 1080p HD image. This has a resolution consisting of 1920 by 1080 progressively scanned pixels, compared to standard DVD's 720 by 480 pixels. In addition, Blu-ray has much wider bandwidth than DVD, delivering signals at speeds up to 48 Mbps, six times faster than DVD's 8 Mbps, and nearly 2.5 times the data of an HDTV broadcast's 19.2 Mbps. *technically, it's violet, but who's keeping track?

Will Blu-ray discs play in my current DVD player?
No. You will need a Blu-ray player to be able to read the smaller, denser information found on a Blu-ray disc.

Will I be able to play standar DVDs on my Samsung Blu-ray player?
Yes. Blu-ray players are backwards compatible with your standard DVDs. They can also play CDs.

Is Blu-ray the same as HD DVD?
No. HD DVD was a competing format with less storage capacity than Blu-ray. With Toshiba, its primary champion announcing on February 19, 2008 that they would end production of HD DVD products, the few companies that were supporting the format announced that they would instead create products for the Blu-ray format.

What does up-conversion mean?
Consumers have over 50 years worth of material in standard definition formats. Up-conversion is the process of taking that existing, standard definition material and converting it (lines and pixels are copied to some degree) to the higher resolution needed to display those signals on an HDTV. When done well, the process can often improve picture quality, though it can't increase actual resolution. The quality of the up-converter, included in everything from up-converting standard DVD players to Blu-ray players and HDTVs, can often determine the quality of the picture.

What kind of cables, connections do I need to have to make Blu-ray work?
You will need either a 3-wire analog component (typically labeled Y, Pr and Pb) or an HDMI digital video connection between the BD player and the TV. The HDMI connection is preferable. Not only will it provide better image quality, but it will pass along higher resolution audio and control information, as well. You may get limited up-conversion options with standard DVDs when using the component connection.

What is firmware and do I need it?
Firmware is like computer software, or the instruction set in the player that tells the hardware what to do under various conditions. Insert a disc, and the firmware tells the player to read the disc. Press the Play button and the firmware tells the player to play the movie. Generally speaking, the firmware is invisible to the end user. But Blu-ray keeps evolving, and new features keep being created. With each new feature that a movie studio comes up with, hardware manufacturers have to release new instruction sets, or firmware, to deal with it. Samsung's ability to easily update the firmware in their BD players makes them one of the best in the business.

Who supports Blu-ray?
At this point, nearly everyone supports Blu-ray. All the major movie studios have announced that they would support Blu-ray with both new and catalog titles. Thousands of movies and music videos are already available. Most major electronics manufacturers have been supporting Blu-ray since the format's beginning.

Can I rent movies on Blu-ray?
Yes. Blockbuster, Hollywood Video and Netflix, among other places, offer Blu-ray titles for rent.

Are my regular DVDs obsolete?
Not by the definition Merriam Webster would use. You can still play your regular DVDs on your Blu-ray disc player, so they're still useful, but you'll want to replace them with Blu-ray versions as they become available in the new format so that you can enjoy the improved image and sound quality.

Is the only benefit to Blu-ray the video quality? Why should I upgrade to Blu-ray?
You will probably upgrade because of the video quality, but you may also appreciate the improved sound quality available on some players as well as the advanced interactive features. Blu-ray offers the latest generation audio codecs that can play back up to 8 channels of surround sound with improved audio quality over that of standard 5.1 digital soundtracks. This includes Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS High Resolution and DTS Master Audio. Blu-ray also offers advanced bonus features that can include interactive game features or picture-in-picture commentary tracks, not to mention additional features that could be downloaded after the disc has been produced.

Do I need to buy a new home theater system?
You don't need a new audio system, but you should at least have a surround system (five speakers and ideally a subwoofer) with Dolby Digital or DTS audio decoding to hear the theater-like audio experience that is available on Blu-ray. Some BD players offer more advanced audio codecs that provide even better quality sound through up to 8 channels of surround.

What do all these audio formats mean?
You can hear better-than theater-like audio at home. As George Lucas has said, sound is 50% of the movie experience. With the right audio equipment, you can hear up to 7.1 channels of sound that is no different than what the recording engineers heard in the mixing room.

What's the benefit of 24p?
Movies are recorded on film at 24 frames per second (fps). Video is recorded and played back at 60 frames per second. Movies must be converted to 60 frames before being played back on your TV. Blu-ray discs record movie content in the original 24 frame format, and convert the signal within the player to output at 60 fps for standard HDTVs. Some current HDTVs, like Samsung's Auto Motion Plus 120Hz models, and undoubtedly more future ones, can accept and play back the 24 frame signal without the intermediary conversion to 60 fps, which can offer a smoother, more natural-looking image.

What does Profile 1.0, 1.1, 2.0 mean?
Blu-ray's specifications for video are broken into three profiles, each with its own set of hardware and software requirements. Profile 1.0 gave hardware manufacturers a grace period to create players that were capable of Blu-ray video playback, but didn't need to meet the final standard profile requirements. This grace period ended October 31, 2007. These players, while not able to take advantage of all of Blu-ray's promised extra content, will provide full 1080p video playback.

Profile 1.1, also known as BonusView, makes certain requirements mandatory: picture-in-picture, secondary audio mixing, a minimum of 256MB of memory (built-in or removable), and the incorporation of a virtual file system. Players created and sold after October 31, 2007 are required to meet the Profile 1.1 specification, and therefore will take advantage of 1.1-enabled bonus materials on certain BD discs.

BD-Live (Profile 2.0) makes mandatory all parts of Profile 1.1, but increases the memory requirement to 1GB and adds the hardware requirement of a network connection. This specification enables the even-more interactive web-based bonus material found on discs that provide such content.

"Don't Buy From Vizio" 2010-09-11

Player died after 6 months - no function would not turn on. I can understand these types of problems but I would not buy again from Vizio based on the Customer Service support I received. Despite the agent knowing that by the serial number I gave him showed the player was less than 1 year old and under warranty I had to email him a proof of purchase (thankfully I purchased on Amazon and was able to go retreive a receipt) and then wait 48 hours for it to be verified. Now I have to pay for shipping back and wait longer for a new unit. I just hope my 46" Vizio TV doesn't crap out - it probably wouldn't even be worth the shipping charge to get it replaced!

I bought this unit, along with a copy Avatar on Blu-ray, to replace my old Pioneer DVD player. It played Avatar with no problems, but when I purchased a copy of Vanishing Point on Blu-ray at Walmart, it wouldn't play it. I called Vizio's tech support and was informed that there are no firmware updates and they didn't know when there would be any. Basically, you have no idea whether the Blu-ray movie you're buying will play or not.That, however is not the worst thing about this player. My old Pioneer had an automatic disc memory that would let you start a dvd at the spot where you left off, even after the disc had been out of the player for a long time. With this Vizio, if you so much as eject it or turn off the power, you're back to the beginning of the movie.Also, the Pioneer would play just about any disc flawlessly - even those with lots of visible scratches. This one will frequently freeze up and skip when playing a BRAND NEW DISC. Combined with the lack of disc memory, the slightest amount of dust or the most microscopic scratch wreaks havoc on the movie-watching experience.As if these problems weren't enough, it has developed a new habit of periodically rejecting whatever disc I try to play until I unplug the player and then plug it back in.In short, I have been much more impressed with the quality of the $30 DVD player I bought for my kids than with this $250 piece of garbage.

If you are very patient it is a fair piece of equipment. It takes forever to do anything.If you want to use it to stream movies from Netflix, you had better be hard wired to the internet because the unit's WiFi capabilities are woefully bad. Even though I have a top-of-the-line N Router, the tech at Vizio told me that the router would have to be within 40 feet of the player for it work work well and not have to rebuffer frequently. I measured the signal strength in the location of the player using two different laptops with only a B/G WiFi capability and both said that in that location I had great signal strength. The tech said that the Vizio receiver was not as good as a laptop and that I should consider hard wiring the player to my internet connection.It would have been nice to know this prior to purchase. I also hate the Remote -- not user friendly.I own a Vizio 52 inch TV and am happy with that. Vizio did not do a good job on the BluRay player.

Very easy to setup with Comcast. With my Verizon Actiontec router it didn't initially work though - I had to disable WEP.(not sure if I should blame the router or this box)I've had it for a couple of months and it's been working great.The lack of buttons on the device (when it's turned off) makes it somewhat kid-proof, which is a nice feature :)

"Buyer beware - major defects" 2010-07-22

This is my first review on Amazon. I'm compelled to write a review for this product in hopes of saving other the time and aggregravation that I experienced with this product. I purchased it in April 2010 ... watched 3 bluray movies on it ... and it died in Jun 2010. When it did work, it was slow to load bluray disks. While the Wifi was a nice option, I ended plugging it directly into my router because the wifi was too slow. Streaming movies from Netflix and Amazon would pause every few minutes to catch-up. Once I plugged it in, it worked much, much better. I did like to interface and wifi options. In June, I went to turn it on and the unit froze and the banner \ loading screen. I tried turning it off, rebooting, and everything else that vizio tech support advised - but no luck. Vizio support had me send them proof of purchase ... and the saga with support began. I call every 2 to 3 days to check the status. It took almosttwo weeks for them to acknoledge my proof of pruchase, and I am still waiting for them to 'decide' what to do next. Please save yourself some time and skip this. On another note, I do own two Vizio HD TV's = and I love them. Just the Bluray player stinks.

To someone who wrote that the loading is slow, that's typical for blu ray players.I just bought the player, and so far so good! I am happy that it can play divx movies since I have a bunch of it, and glad it's not going to waste.HDMI is awesome to use, less components, audio and video is amazing! I highly recommend using it, So clear and sound is awesome. Even a regular dvd movie the picture is great. Even old movies aren't that grainy as a regular dvd player would show.I was confused at first when putting a divx movie in, it doesn't start automatically, you have to enter disc tray for it to show the menu of the dvd.I notice there's an ethernet cable outlet behind the player. I am not sure I can use it considering the modem is upstairs, and i'm downstairs! But for the price you pay which I got at clearance price of 118, I can't complain. Having it play divx is enough for me to bypass that technical issue.It is light weighted, so that's a plus.There is a promotion for purchasing which is you get a free divx movie if you register online, it's not worth the hassle. I couldn't even download the movie. And they only give you a few selections, not worth it. It took awhile to even find the VOD code. YOu can do a search online to show you how to download divx and burn it on a cd.Yes cdr can be read by the player as well as a dvd+r It's also quiet, so not that loud when playing.I'd recommend this.

I had this player for one almost a year and it stopped working. I had not even used it that much. I have it connected via Ethernet so upgrades are not a problem. I would not recommend buying this as I have found that many others have the same problem.

Soon after purchasing this player I wrote a favorable review and almost immediately got a unhelpful vote. I thought maybe I was rushing to judgment so I removed the review. We've now had the unit for several months and have used it often for standard, HD and Blu-ray DVDs as well as Internet Netflix movies. Every mode works as advertised. I even downloaded updated firmware without a problem. My only criticism is that the player loads somewhat slowly. Blu-ray DVDs must be in excellent condition or they will not load, but that is typical of the breed.

Brought it new from amazon.com arrived as promised on time. Was busy so it remained in the box for 3 weeks before setup. brought new cables, also brought a rosewill wireless adapter from newegg, installation was a breeze with the adapter. The newflix and pandora, and youtube is wicked. The tray movement is a little noisy, that why i gave 4 stars. Have not tried bluray yet,but soon. I will recommend this product.

We purchased this product for a family member. It had everything that we wanted; blu-ray playing capabilities, netflix, youtube, etc. Having an unlimited netflix streaming account, we are able to watching netflix movies when we run out of blu-rays to watch. With an unlimited choice of television shows and movies, one will never run out of things to watch. The high-definition netflix shows were great. Blu-rays also looked outstanding on this tv. With the available ethernet port on this player, we were able to experience the whole Blu-ray experience with BD-Live.

I just ordered this refurbished unit for well under a hundred dollars with a hdmi cable included, and I will provide a thorough updated review when it arrives and I use it. Of course, panasonic durability is well known, I have a five piece carousel Panasonic DVD/CD Player DVD-CV47 that I've owned for so long I've forgotten when I purchased it, am thinking I've had it for about ten years. Of course that was pretty new technology/merchandise back then and it even has an s video link port, but is now used as a cd player mostly since I have other dvd players around the home, I used it alot previously, though it has some compatibility issues with cd-r backups of music(firmware upgradeable?, ah, don't matter I guess). All I care basically is some blue ray playing and I don't have high speed internet or such, actually streaming video online doesn't really interest me(being old school video purchasing/renting), just playing some blue ray movies and up-converting regular dvd's to my 720P lcd t.v is bout all that interests me. I'm hoping there won't be any over complicated firmware updates that are too hard to perform. I am actually hoping the upconverting of regular dvd's is going to be okay, I worked hard not to buy a upconverter when a blue ray player would accomplish the same thing for just a little more money. I still don't believe the technology has caught up with blue ray players for them to be even reliable for streaming video, or all the extras they are trying to bundle in them, it probably makes them unreliable even more, which is why I almost bought the panasonic bd45 for $99, a totally no frills model. Well anyway, this was cheaper by far since I needed an hdmi cord included too, and was last years equivalent model to the bd 65 of this year. I'll put mine through its paces and will make sure refubished unit means something good or it can go back.

***UPDATE##$$ I received the unit rather fast, and it operates pretty fast so I can't see where folks say theirs are "very" slow, this takes about five seconds to start up once I hit power on, but starting up even blue rays is relatively quick compared to the scares of some products and others' reviews even of same product, dunno, I mean, I don't think I am hyping the speed other than it appears to have been reworked recently, it works great, I don't have high speed internet anymore to check the internet goodies of which I don't care about, can't tell if it has ever been owned before since it is like new and only the warranty pages for panasonic have yellow "x's" marked on them, ....it upconverts regular dvds, like old b-movies with poor transfers really well, it has three audio remaster settings or the factory setting(its just something to play around with on bad audio, not sure if it really helps or not sometimes), and playing of blue ray movies is going okay for right now, though I have tried only two movies so far. The remote control has sections to control my t.v and just audio for my old, very old, like 1991 pioneer multi receiver. When I pop in a movie, it automatically tunes in my t.v to the hdmi port I use for blue ray, other than digital satellite hdmi port. The hdmi cable included with it seems to do its job rather well. I guess time will only tell, I'll be renting blue ray movies at least a couple times a month to test the blue ray function, will buy more used/new blue ray movies, time will tell. But once again, upconversion of my old b-movies of public domain movies put on 50 packs(like mill creek 50 horror classics) I bought here on amazon is terrific, much better than my regular dvd players, they play just as best as some of those poor transfers can play. On an odd note, there was literature with the instructions pertaining to online content media capabilities, netflix was listed with a little check next to it, don't know what that means, I don't have high speed internet. Was mine upgraded to 2010 standards? AS fast as it is, sure seems so, it is faster than my friends panasonic bd30 from last year on loading bd and regular dvd's!

This player is an excellent choice for those wishing to upgrade to Blu-Ray and is on a budget. Even tho it is not priced as high as other players, don't let that fool you into thinking this is not as good, because it is! Very well constructed and thought out! Plays Amazon on demand movies, and Netflix perfectly! Every disc I have played in it thus far has worked flawlessly! It's a Good buy, and you won't be sorry! Also, this sells for about $90.00 more in the stores.
